All About Ashtanga Yoga w/Pattie McCann ERYT

Every Saturday at Strongheart we practice what we call Ashtanga-Inspired Yoga. We start with Sun Salutations and move through the standing poses that are a part of the traditional Ashtanga Yoga practice. But we add a few twists—reorder some things—add some things—generally let the practice move in some different directions. But like most power yoga and vinyasa yoga taught in the U.S., the source is Pattahbi Jois’ Ashtanga Yoga sequence.

So we thought it would be interesting to dive into the source and understand the actual traditional practice for those who haven’t participated in any Mysore style classes. We’ll go over how Ashtanga yoga is sequenced and taught; take a look at some poses that might be completely new to many of us; and just try to really look at the source that we’re adapting.

Some video, some discussion, some practice. We won’t be practicing for 2 hours, but we will try some things out just for fun. We’ll play with it a little. David Swenson’s  Ashtanga Yoga: The Practice Manual will be our resource guide, but there’s no need to buy the book. Handouts will be provided. CEU credits will be available for Yoga Alliance teachers.
